The North West and North Wales Branch are delighted to invite members to a site meet and greet at the North Hamilton development in Leicester. 

This 1,650-home scheme on former agricultural land is managed under a multi-developer Greenspace Agreement by Greenbelt. It features extensive amenity open space (4.2 ha), equipped play areas, woodland (existing and new), hedgerows, footpaths and an internationally recognised Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS). The visit will offer the opportunity top see how large-scale public open space and SUDS infrastructure are delivered and maintained in the long term, together with community engagement work that has been ongoing for many years. The site obtained Green Flag status in 2022, and has retained the prestigious Green Flag Award for four consecutive years. 

Key features include:

  • 4.2 ha of amenity open space
  • 7 LEAPs and 2 LAPs equipped play areas
  • 3.3 ha of woodland (including 1.1 ha existing and 2.2 ha new planting)
  • Over 1.5km of hedgerows (existing and newly planted)
  • An internationally recognised Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) with attenuation basins, swales and rip-rap features
  • Extensive meadows, greenways and footpaths that integrate with the surrounding countryside

Now fully established and managed by Greenbelt since 2006; the site demonstrates best-practice long-term management of public open space, biodiversity enhancement, community engagement and innovative SUDS design.

Street parking will be available on site and there is a local community car park that can be used for a fee.

To be ready to start the tour at 10.00am.

  • Community liaison and resident engagement strategies
  • Lessons learned from over 15 years of on-site management
