Helmsley Walled Garden
Helmsley Walled Garden, Cleveland Way, Helmsley, North Yorkshire
Time: 10.00am
Originally built in 1759 to provide fruit and vegetables to the Feversham family at Duncombe Park, the garden sits beneath the imposing ruins of Helmsley Castle. This historic walled garden now boasts vibrant borders, glasshouses and the Plant Heritage collection of Yorkshire apple cultivars. Managed by a small staff team the garden relies very much on volunteers who are involved in the maintenance of the garden, helping in the shop and kiosk. The garden is very much part of the local community in Helmsley and aims to enhance the physical and emotional health and wellbeing of everyone who uses the garden with an emphasis on therapeutic horticulture.
Executive Director June Tainsh will lead our tour of the garden as well as explaining their Lottery funded volunteering initiatives ‘Learning to Grow’ and ‘Over the Garden Gate’
The garden does not have any public parking. The nearest car park is Cleveland Way car park 150m from the main entrance. Use postcode YO62 5AZ
Lunch is not provided, guests are welcome to use the Vine House Café in the garden, local facilities or bring a picnic.
NT Rievaulx Terrace
Rievaulx, Helmsley, North Yorkshire, YO62 5LJ
Time: 1pm
One of Yorkshire’s finest 18th-century landscape gardens, containing two temples. Originally part of the Rievaulx Abbey estate, the terrace’s 18th-century owner Thomas Duncombe II planned to create a verdant garden with views over the abbeys’ ruins. At the south end is a lavish Tuscan temple folly inspired by Temple of Vesta at Tivoli, near Rome. At the north end is the Ionic Temple, once used by the Duncombe family for dining and socialising after promenading along the Terrace.
